Kaden Honeycutt and Layne Riggs will decide the Truck Series championship Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and both drivers said they will race each other the same way they have all year.
Honeycutt leads Riggs by 20 points going into the race, which starts at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1. Twenty points is the difference between winning the race and finishing second.
Two drivers above the rest
Honeycutt, in the No. 11 for TRICON Garage, has four wins, 18 top-10s and 577 laps led in 24 races. Riggs, in the No. 34 for Front Row Motorsports, has seven wins, 15 top-10s and 988 laps led. No other driver has led more than 200 laps this season.
“I think obviously myself and the 11 truck, no matter who’s driving it, have always been the best two in the series consistently,” Riggs said Thursday. “I think if you put that down on paper at the beginning of the season, that’s what we’d have all expected.”
Honeycutt: ‘Win the championship the right way’
“It’s been nothing but a great season for both of us,” Honeycutt said. “But I think as far as the way we race each other is going to be no different tomorrow. We’ve raced really hard for the last five or six years and we’ve worked extremely hard to get to this opportunity. I think if we can win the championship the right way, I think that would progress us to move up to the next level a lot easier than wrecking each other to win this deal.”
Honeycutt said after Martinsville that his lead was “definitely not comfortable,” as Pit This Time reported.
Riggs: ‘I’ve already proven that I can do it’
Riggs, 24, and Honeycutt, 23, will both return to their Truck teams in 2027. Riggs said the title will not change his future.
“Tomorrow, winning the championship or not, has no difference on my future,” Riggs said. “I feel like I’ve proven myself to everybody. I look at the stats of other drivers that have the pedigree that I have in the Truck Series so far, and they’ve all gone on and still do great things in the Cup Series.”
Practice
Ty Majeski was fastest in Thursday’s practice. Honeycutt was fifth and Riggs sixth. Riggs had the third-best 10-lap average and Honeycutt the fourth, behind ThorSport Racing’s Jake Garcia.
Truck qualifying is Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET on FS1. Chandler Smith, who won at Martinsville, is third in points but out of title contention. See the full Homestead schedule.
