John Hunter Nemechek confirmed Saturday that he talked with RFK Racing about its No. 60 Cup car for 2027, but said no one knew how many races the car would run. He chose to drive for Haas Factory Team in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series instead.

Nemechek: ‘No one really knew’

“Yeah, we did have a few discussions over there,” Nemechek said at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “As you said, it’s debatable how many races they’re gonna run. At the time of the discussions, no one really knew. We didn’t know if it was gonna be part-time, full-time, what that situation was gonna be.”

‘I wanted to go win races’

“But for me, I wanted to go win races. I wanted to go and have fun and be in contending, winning equipment every single week, and know that I can show up and make a difference internally,” Nemechek said.

“But also make a difference on the racetrack, and we felt like this was the right fit from my perspective, from Pye-Barker’s perspective as well. And then obviously talking with Joe (Custer) and kind of getting all the final details nailed down, and how we were gonna go about it, it just felt like the right fit for us at the time.”

“And definitely gonna prove that to the world next year that it was the right fit.”

Nemechek will drive the No. 41 Chevrolet full time in 2027, with Pye-Barker Fire & Safety as the primary sponsor for most races, as Pit This Time reported.

RFK’s No. 60

RFK is moving Ryan Preece to the No. 6 next year, which leaves the No. 60 without a charter. The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi reported this week that RFK is considering running the car full time with a rotation of drivers, as Pit This Time reported.

Leaving Legacy

Today’s Cup finale is Nemechek’s last race in Legacy Motor Club’s No. 42 Toyota. Josh Berry replaces him at Legacy next year.

The Straight Talk Wireless 400 starts at 3 p.m. ET on NBC from Homestead-Miami Speedway.
