Joey Logano said his children were crying when he got back to his motorhome after his car flipped at Talladega Superspeedway, because his radio and in-car camera went out in the crash and his family had no way to know he was OK.

Logano told the story to Will Buxton on FOX Sports’ SPEED channel this week.

Logano: ‘They’re all thinking the worst’

“I kept trying to connect my radios back to say, ‘Hey, I’m okay.’ But nobody knew I was ok because the in-car camera went out; everything went out when I flipped,” Logano said. “They’re all thinking the worst. I got back to the bus, and all my kids were crying, and I was like, Dad’s okay. I’m good.”

Logano said after the race that he was thinking about his wife, Brittany, while he was upside down. “She was probably wigging out on me, but I tried talking to whoever I could, but when I flipped everything came off out of the pockets there,” he said.

A new family

The crash came days after Joey and Brittany Logano finalized the adoption of two children they had fostered. The couple also has three biological children.

The crash

Logano was in the outside lane with five laps left in Sunday’s YellaWood 500 when he spun off Carson Hocevar‘s bumper in the tri-oval, hit the outside wall and flipped. His No. 22 Team Penske Ford slid on its roof across the start-finish line before stopping. Safety workers turned the car over and he climbed out.

He said the car held up far better than in his 2021 Talladega flip. “The last time I flipped it was crushed on my head. This time, I don’t think anything really caved or crushed at all,” Logano said. “There were some vicious hits in that one. I’m just happy to be alive.”

Hocevar took the blame for the contact, as Pit This Time reported, and Logano said Hocevar had been pushing him well until “one bad push.”

What’s next

Logano, a three-time Cup Series champion, finished 34th and is fifth in the Chase standings, 100 points behind Kyle Larson. The Cup Series races next at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia, on Sunday, November 1, at 2 p.m. ET on NBC.
