Carson Hocevar confirmed that he and Bubba Wallace really did play rock-paper-scissors while racing at Talladega Superspeedway, during a stretch of fuel saving so slow that the main pack fell below minimum speed.

Wallace mentioned the game on his team radio during the first stage of Sunday’s YellaWood 500. Hocevar told the rest of the story on his Twitch stream after the race.

When Wallace’s team told him to move up past a few cars, he answered: “I was just starting to play rock-paper-scissors with the 77… Let him know sorry for bailing on him.”

Hocevar: ‘I threw paper. He threw scissors’

“All of a sudden in front of me is Bubba Wallace’s car, and he starts doing this,” Hocevar said. “I was like, ‘What is he doing?’ He was telling me, ‘Hey, let’s play rock-paper-scissors.’ So all of a sudden he started doing it.”

“I threw paper. He threw scissors. And so I texted him after and I was like, ‘Hey, by the way, I lost rock-paper-scissors. You won. I threw paper. You threw scissors,’ and he sent me dying laughing.”

“And so we’re literally playing rock-paper-scissors down the front stretch. I think it was into Turn 1.”

Why the field was so slow

Most of the field saved fuel through the 98-lap first stage. NASCAR Cup Series managing director Brad Moran said Wednesday that NASCAR warned teams running below minimum speed that they would be black-flagged, and that fixing fuel saving will “probably be project number one for the off season,” as Pit This Time reported. RFK Racing‘s three cars ran flat out instead and finished the stage 1-2-3.

How their days ended

Hocevar was caught in the crash that flipped Joey Logano with five laps left, a crash he took the blame for, but got back out and finished sixth. Wallace started the Lap 132 crash when he got into the back of Ryan Blaney.

The Cup Series races next at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia, on Sunday, November 1, at 2 p.m. ET on NBC.
