NASCAR has no plans to add charters to the Cup Series for Dodge‘s return in 2027, NASCAR’s president of event management John Probst said.
The Cup Series will stay at 36 chartered cars. Dodge is returning through Kaulig Racing, which already holds two charters and is switching manufacturers, as Pit This Time reported.
Probst: ‘Not really consideration for that right now’
“We are not intending to create any new charters in our Cup Series,” Probst said, adding that there was “not really consideration for that right now.”

Why it’s complicated
Each charter guarantees a team a spot in every race and a set share of the sport’s money. FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass wrote on X that adding charters would be difficult because the 36 current charter teams are promised specific payments through 2031, when the current charter agreement ends. Probst did not give that as the reason.

A new manufacturer, not a new team
Some fans pointed to past NASCAR comments suggesting charters could be made available when a new manufacturer joined the sport. RACER’s Kelly Crandall wrote on X that those comments were about a new manufacturer coming in with new teams, not an existing Cup team switching brands. Kaulig is not a new team, and it already has its charters.

Dodge’s return
Dodge will field two Chargers for Kaulig in 2027, with AJ Allmendinger and Ty Dillon expected to drive. It is Dodge’s first Cup program since 2012. The engines will come from ECR Engines, which is owned by Richard Childress Racing and also builds Chevrolet engines.
With no new charters coming, any new team that wants to join Dodge in the Cup Series as a chartered team would have to buy an existing charter.
The 2027 season starts with the Daytona 500 in February. The 2026 season ends Sunday, November 8, at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
